Let’s talk SPF ft the new product launch from Dermalogica

Hello Bees, I hope you’re all keeping safe and well during these stressful times of Covid19 and the self isolation. In today’s post we will be talking all things SPF and reviewing the newest product that Dermalogica kindly sent my way.

Disclaimer– This post contains items that were sent to me for free to test. As always my opinions are honest and my own.

Before I started really getting into skincare and actually researching what the effects of the ingredients in the products I was buying were, I just assumed that SPF was only for use in the summer months when the sun was present but that couldn’t be far from the truth. As the damage is done from UV rays from the sun which is present all year round.

What is SPF?

SPF stands for sun protection factor and its use is to prolong or prevent the time it takes to get burnt from the sun. This often comes in cream form or in a lighter liquid spray bottle and is used by applying and rubbing into the skin.

Why is it important to use an SPF?

If you go outside without using an SPF a process called photo aging starts, the skin reacts to sun exposure by making melanin which is how we get that gorgeous looking tan in the summer. Too much exposure causes stress to the skin which breaks down collagen which is a protein that keeps the skin strong. Loosing its strength will cause the skin to wrinkle and therefore make you look older quicker than the normal ageing process. It can also cause brown spots to appear and after chronic sun exposure cause DNA damage to the skin cells which can eventually lead to skin cancer. Those with darker skin are more naturally protected, whereas those with lighter skin are less shielded.

When should I be applying it to my Face?

SPF should be applied to the face daily when venturing out. I wouldn’t worry about applying any if you’re not going to get into direct contact with the sun. I like to apply it before I apply my foundation and currently use the Dermalogica Prisma Protect which is a moisturiser with SPF included. It is important to wear it under makeup as makeup doesn’t act as a barrier for light damage, and yes that includes a more full coverage base!

Now onto the new Invisible Physical Defence cream that Dermalogica kindly sent me to try. I already love quite a few of their products and the 2 in 1 product I mentioned above is my favourite. This claims to be suitable for all skin types, weightless and blends easily into the skin leaving it invisible rather than a chalky white cast that some sun creams/SPFs give. The main ingredients include:

Ultra- Sheer Zinc Oxide that provides invisible protection against UVA/UVB rays and blue light.

Bioactive Mushroom Complex that helps soothe the skin and reduce UV induced redness and dryness.

Antioxidant Green Tea that helps fight free- radical skin damage.

I really like the simple packaging and the addition of the colour yellow on the front, it really adds to the fresh sun vibes and matches the product inside. This comes in a squeezey tube with a flip cap lid and contains of 50ml of product inside. This is gluten and paraben free, contains no artificial fragrances and colours and is vegan and cruelty free! This comes with a lofty price tag of £49 which is definitely aimed for those with a larger budget but is an average price for Dermalogica skincare.

After squeezing out a small amount of product from the tube I noticed this had a medicinal smell with a hint of lavender. If you have tried or owned the Dermalogica Sleep Cocoon then it’s a great comparison scent wise, once blended however the scent does fade to almost nothing. Now onto the consistency, this cream comes out quick thick but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it feels very thin when applying into the skin. A little goes a long way with this product so not much is needed. This melts into the skin and I’m pleased to say that their claims of no chalky white residue are correct. It’s also worth noting that it dries quickly and leaves a matte finish which made my skin look nice and smoothed out in the process! I also found that it didn’t change the way my foundation, concealer or powder looked when applied underneath and didn’t change the wear or longevity either which is a huge plus.

Although it’s definitely on the pricey side I definitely give my approval of this SPF. I love Dermalogica in general but I’m just so pleased how fast it dries, making it super easy to apply and get on with your day without having to waste time to sit and air out. It’s also a huge deal for me that it doesn’t leave a white cast to the skin as most cheaper alternatives leave. Now we just need this annoying but necessary lock down to lift so we can all go and get our much needed summer! Do you use a SPF? If so which one? Let me know in the comments below.
